What is a BIN?

A BIN (Bank Identification Number), also called an IIN (Issuer Identification Number), is the leading digits on a payment card. Most cards use the first six digits; some issuers use up to eight.

Those digits identify the card issuer and help merchants and platforms validate card details before a payment is processed.

Credit card BIN lookup

A credit card BIN lookup (or BIN checker) matches the BIN to issuer metadata: card brand, credit or debit type, prepaid or commercial flags, and the country where the card was issued.

Merchants, payment teams, and fraud analysts use BIN lookup to spot mismatches between the card and the customer, route transactions correctly, and reduce chargebacks and card-not-present fraud.

Bank, Visa, and Mastercard BIN data

Every BIN ties to an issuing bank or financial institution and a card scheme such as Visa, Mastercard, American Express, or Discover.

Our BIN lookup shows the issuer name, scheme, and network brand when available, so you can confirm whether a card is Visa or Mastercard, which bank issued it, and whether the BIN country fits your checkout or payout rules.

How to check a BIN

Type the first six digits (or full 6 to 11 digit BIN) into the field above and run the lookup. You can also find the BIN on the front of a physical card: it is usually the first six digits printed before the masked account number.

For production checkout or batch screening, use the BIN lookup API to validate cards automatically in your app or payment flow.
